Monday, 9 January: Betway SA20 has confirmed exciting additions to its playing format for the inaugural season starting on 10 January. The six teams will play 33 matches in total, including three playoff matches that consist of two semi-finals and the final.

The additions have been included to improve the quality of the product while preserving the sanctity of the game.

In an innovative move to level the playing field, each captain can nominate 13 players to take the field before the toss. After the toss, each captain can select their final starting XI and the remainder of the players will automatically become substitute players.

Teams will be encouraged to put in dominant performances, with the winning team awarded four points and a bonus-point win generating five points. The bonus point will be awarded to a team who achieves a run rate of 1.25 times that of the opposition. In case of a no result, both teams will be awarded two points, while the losing team will not receive any points.

In addition, the following rules have been adjusted:

• The pace of play will be protected without suspensions with captains charged with in-game penalties for slow over-rates through fielding restrictions.

• There has been an amendment to the free-hit rule, a bowled dismissal can’t lead to byes if the ball ricochets off the stumps.

• Positive and attacking fielding will be encouraged. No runs can be taken off an intentional attempt to run out the batter if a direct hit deflects off the stumps.

• There will be two strategic time-outs of 2 minutes 30 seconds in duration in each innings. The time-outs are to allow the teams to re-group tactically.


Six Powerplay overs will be implemented where only two fielders will be allowed outside the 30-yard circle.

In the event of teams finishing on equal points, the right to progress through to the final and those to play in the play-off will be determined as follows:
• the team with the most number of wins;
• If still equal, the team with the highest number of bonus points;
• If still equal, the team with the highest net run rate;
• If still equal, the team with the most number of wins over the other team(s) who are equal on points and have the same number of wins;
• If still equal, the team with the highest runs to wickets ratio throughout the tournament;
• If still equal, the team with the highest wickets to runs ratio throughout the tournament.

In a match declared as a No Result, run rate is not applicable.

The first semi-final will include the team finishing top of the group stages against the team finishing fourth. The second semi-final will be between the teams finishing second and third respectively. The winners of the two semi-finals will contest the final.

Each team is allowed to field up to four international players in a match, giving plenty of opportunities for homegrown Proteas stars and young local talent to shine while playing alongside the best in the world.

UB40 Featuring Ali Campbell will add another chapter to a story that began in the Birmingham suburb of Moseley in 1979 when UB40, taking their name from the form given to individuals claiming unemployment benefit, started putting an indigenous British slant on Jamaican reggae. After reaching number four in the charts with King / Food For Thought, the multi-racial band released their debut album Signing Off in 1980. During their career they have sold in excess of 70 million records and topped the UK singles chart on three occasions – with Red Red Wine in 1983; I Got You Babe (a duet between Ali and Pretenders singer and long-standing UB40 champion Chrissie Hynde) in 1985; and (I Can't Help) Falling In Love With You in 1993. Two of those hits, Red Red Wine and (I Can't Help) Falling In Love With You, also went to number one in the USA. Lead singer Ali Campbell joined Birmingham singer and toaster Pato Banton to top the UK charts again with Baby Come Back in 1994. Paying homage to the songs that inspired them, UB40 also released three volumes of the Labour Of Love series, covering Jamaican standards such as Eric Donaldson's Cherry Oh Baby and Lord Creator's Kingston Town.

Ali is joined by his incredible 9-piece band and will be honouring long time member Astro who sadly passed in 2021. Whilst a handful of songs from the forthcoming album will feature alongside favourites from the Labour Of Love series, Ali is keen to include older numbers such as King (about the legacy of American Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King) and One In Ten (about unemployment in the UK) that are, unfortunately, as timely today as when they were first sung in 1980 and 1981.

'We put King back into the set because it's so bloody appropriate,' says Ali. 'We wrote it 40 years ago, but it's still representative of what’s happening in America. It's depressing that nothing has changed. It's the same with One In Ten in the UK. With the impact the coronavirus had on jobs, we could soon be looking at unemployment figures on a par with the early Eighties.” Those songs will feature in a show we've been honing for the past 12 years.

‘We'll always play the classics, like Red Red Wine and (I Can't Help) Falling In Love With You, but we like to change the beginning and end of the show. We'll play Lean On Me and maybe add three or four new songs. The band members are all fantastic musicians and we've climbed back up to the biggest venues in the past 12 years.'

Johannesburg, 29 November 2022 – Africa Cares Tennis Challenge which was set to take place this coming weekend at the DP World Wanderers Stadium has announced that the event will now be moved to Arthur Ashe Tennis Centre, still in Johannesburg.

The organisers of the Africa Cares Tennis Challenge have announced that due to the unexpectedly low ticket sales, they have decided to move the event to a smaller venue, which is more in-line with what the event stands for; which is to develop and promote tennis in South Africa, to all communities.

There were also concerns around forecasted weather causing delays in the building of the court structure, should the event still have taken place in the stadium. The Arthur Ashe Tennis facility has existing tennis court structures and has hosted many international tennis events.

Arthur Ashe was an (and remains the only) African American professional tennis player who won three Grand Slam singles titles. Arthur was an author, teacher, and activist who fought for civil rights and racial equality, not only in the United States but worldwide, particularly against the apartheid systems of South Africa. He was also the first black tennis professional player to play in South Africa’s National Championship.

The Arthur Ashe Stadium was erected in 1974 by him and was recently refurbished which sees current programmes at the centre that focus on both tennis and academics, something that Africa Cares Tennis Challenge is passionate about and feels that it aligns with its values.

Africa Cares Tennis Challenge aims to use sports as a vehicle to promote an international awareness-raising campaign for No Violence against Women And Children. The event is set to bring international and local tennis players including World Number 2 tennis player Ons Jabeur, former Swiss tennis player Martina Hingis, German-Jamaican Dustin Brown, American Sloane Stephens who has already arrived in South Africa this past weekend, South African Tennis players Khololwam Montsi and Isabella Kruger, British tennis player Francesca Jones, and Karolina Pliskova who is from the Czech Republic.

Johannesburg, South Africa, 22 November 2022 – Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova also affectionately known as the #AceQueen by being the world’s best-serving female tennis player since 2015, is coming to South Africa! Pliskova will be playing at the Africa Cares Women’s Tennis Challenge that is set to take place on the 3rd and 4th of December at the DP World Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.
The former world number 1 of the Women’s Tennis Association is the new replacement of Romanian Tennis player, Simona Halep at the Africa Cares Tennis Challenge who is currently dealing with her suspension.
Karolina Pliskova who won her first WTA Tour Title in 2013, whilst beating Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the finals is ecstatic to not only showcase the necessary skills and discipline required to be a successful tennis player but using tennis as a vehicle for change on devastating issues such as gender-based violence.
“I am always happy to be a part of a good cause hence why I started my charitable project #AceQueen. So being a part of Africa Cares Women’s Tennis Challenge which is not only about tennis but is also a campaign on putting a spotlight on stopping gender-based violence in South Africa is commendable to be a part of whilst playing a sport I love,” said Karolina Pliskova.

the former world number one first-ever Czech female player is British tennis sensation, Francesca Jones. The 22-year old won three consecutive matches at the Australian Open in 2021, which helped her qualify for her first grand slam.
Francesca, who is born with a rare genetic condition called Ectrodactyly Ectodermal Dysplasia (EED) syndrome (she was born with three fingers and a thumb on each hand, three toes on her right foot and four toes on her left) has been an inspiration to many. This has not stopped her from participating and becoming a rising tennis star and is taking this opportunity at the Africa Cares Women’s Tennis Challenge to inspire those who feel as though they are limited because of any condition they have.
“As a person living with EED, I faced many obstacles but this did not stop me from participating in a sport that I enjoy. I am glad I get to show that to the crowd in South Africa and hopefully also help those who are experiencing any form of obstacles that anything is possible if you put your mind to it,” said Francesca Jones.
